Good leads dead-end and seemingly ironclad confessions crumble, but the author's resourcefulness and determination to catch his brother's killers keep this sordid tale moving along at a quick clip. Buy. A gruesome look at the underbelly of society, and one man's crusade to make sure that killers get justice, even if the victim was 'just a druggie'. “Nobody Walks is a very different kind of thriller: more Richard Stark than John Le Carre. He now lives in Oxford and works in London. Tom Bettany is one such hero. I enjoyed the links but be warned that this is far more dark and gritty. Nobody Walks is a stand alone mystery but for those readers who love Mick Herron’s Slough House series, a few of those characters are woven into the plot and add to the intrigue. It also analyses reviews to verify trustworthiness. Having read most of Mick Herron's books, I am of the opinion that he saves his best plots for those in the 'Slough House' series. Almost monotone. I don't - still don't - know what it is turns writing from pedestrian to instantly absorbing, immediately grabbing attention and holding it, not necessarily in a flashy way, with a raining down of metaphors or reams of description, but whatever it is Mick Herron possesses it in spades. Good leads dead-end and seemingly ironclad confessions crumble, but the author's resourcefulness and determination to catch his brother's killers keep this sordid tale moving along at a quick clip. Brilliant. It's difficult to write too much more without spoilers but, suffice to say, this should suit fans of Herron down to the ground. This one is not part of his. It mentions a few other familiar names, and has a very similar style. However, his other stories, including 'Nobody Walks', are still a very enjoyable read. It's starts off with a that old trope man finds out estranged son is dead, man decides he needs to do something about and does. Already he has treated us to classic portraits including the bald and bewigged head of MI5’s Intelligence Service, Dame Ingrid Tearney, and the pale and twitchy successful games producer, Vincent Driscoll. The writing throughout is terse and fast-paced and intelligent, it reminded me of the likes of Malcolm Mackay's Glasgow Trilogy, but the longer it went on.. the more it turned into the sort of thriller I like less than 'straight' crime fiction.
